In honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King holiday, Teamwork Englewood AAMI program participants were invited to the private screening of the documentary, Double Victory, based on the lives of black pilots who made a stand against segregation in the military during World War II.
After the screening of the documentary, the youth were able to interact and take pictures with some of the actual Tuskegee Airmen featured in the documentary. The attention and respect the youth gave after watching the documentary speaks volumes to the fact that we must connect our youth to their history. Far too many of today's youth are growing up without a sense of their own history. To instill in the youth of today a sense of history is to turn their attention to the future that they will inherit and must improve.
Harvey Barnett, a AAMI peer leader, said that he "really thought the documentary was exciting and that it was good that the Tuskegee Airmen interacted with the youth and told about our history and took photos."
The AAMI group received free passes to the movie "Red Tails", based on the story of the Tuskeegee Airmen. The AAMI youth are also scheduled to take an actual flight with the Chicago Tuskegee Airmen.
