News—Hoofers South Tap Dancers
Tap dancing emerges from Englewood. The Hoofers Club Englewood is a chair aerobic tap dance program created by Chicago Southsider, Brenda Woods. Woods parents were both professional tap dancers and Woods says, "I was born tapping." The name, The Hoofers Club Englewood Program, came from the famous Hoofer Club in Harlem from the 1930's and the inspiration came from seeing famous tap dance performer Ernest Brownie Brown in action.
Benefits
The seniors receive training from Woods, who has more than 40years of tap dance experience. In creating The Hoofers Club Englewood, the goal is to provide a positive aging program for seniors between the ages of 55-85. The program is free! The classes are Thursday mornings from 10:00 am -11:00 am at Hamilton Park.
What Else?
Beginners, intermediates and the advanced are welcome to join the club. Members of this club are also treated to a music component where they learn about different genres such as jazz, gospel, r&b, reggae and hip hop. These members are not just limited to chair tap dance; they also do sing along, karaoke and name that tune.
Performance.
Hoofers South. The first club, and now the second club, Hoofers Club Englewood, pair together to have a grand performance every November. These dancing seniors also get to showcase their talent to the public by performing throughout the city. They have performed for organizations such as the Najwa Student Council, Relay for Life, an event hosted by The American Cancer Society and the Senior Holistic Day Care.
Interested? Contact Brenda Woods at 773-902-7391 or Sandra Thomas Park Supervisor 312-747-6174 or 312-747-6174
The Hoofers Club Englewood Program is supported by the Chicago Park District, City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and the Englewood Community Cultural Planning Council.

Calendar—"On Your Sunday Browse" is Greater Englewood's weekly series of postings regarding standing programs, offerings and items such as scholarships, summer programs and the like which may have a distant deadline. While not immediately pending events, they are "eventful" and deserve to be featured somewhere on our home page where our visitors can easily come upon them.
We could be talking about a new home day care in the neighborhood; a coffeehouse for that creative high school student of yours; a scholarship program that has an end date a month or so away; public, home or personal safety tips from CAPS and the like.
Items found here tend to be moved "the week of" for posting "on the day of."
If you or your organization has an on-going program that you would like to post here, call 773.602.4507 and ask for Rashan. The same goes for events scheduled some ways off. If your church, for instance, expects to do a musicale, dinner, etc., you should post it here. As the "week of" arrives, your posting will then be placed on "the day of."

You are invited to attend Imagine Englewood if’s 3rd Annual Youth Fundraiser to be held from 8-4 on Saturday, September 25, 2010, at the True Vine M.B. Church, 6720 S. Stewart Ave. in Chicago. This year's theme is "Hollywood in Englewood. . .Where Stars Walk." Englewood youth will “hit the runway” showcasing the designs of Chi-Vas White, Englewood native and creator of ONELLW Athletic Clothing. The young models will receive certificates of recognition for their contribution to the event’s success.
IEi is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, whose mission is to strengthen and empower the Englewood community through teaching youth healthy living, environmental awareness and positive communication skills. Proceeds from "Hollywood in Englewood" will provide funding for IEi's Youth Empowerment and Leadership programs which focus on lead awareness, prevention and treatment. Englewood has one of the highest incidence of lead-poisoning in the nation, and children's lives are being ruined. Our goal is a lead-free community where residents take an active part in social change. Through media and advocacy training, we prepare our young people to take the lead in the fight against lead poisoning, as well as other issues that impact upon the Englewood community. We won't stop until Englewood is lead-free.
In the event that you cannot attend “Hollywood in Englewood”, we would appreciate your sponsorship of a table for eight young people. Tickets are $10.00 per person. Donation options are cash, check or PAYPAL (please visit our website: www.imagineenglewoodif.org). Expressions From Englewood IV ready for reading!
Expressions From Englewood, a journal that features prose, fiction, and poetry from people living, working and/or going to school in the community, is now in its fourth edition! This new edition, along with the highly acclaimed third edition, will be available for purchase at the upcoming Printers Row Lit Fest, which will be held June 12-13 in historic Printers Row. Corey Hall, the publisher and editor, will be located at table 402, located on the north side of Polk Street. The journals cost $10, with all proceeds going toward the printing of all future journals.
Once again, an impressive, emotional array is on display in the journal’s pages. Highlights from the prose selections include “My Experience with Incubus,” “Legal, Illegal, and Life,” “Dearest Family: Leave Me the Hell Alone!” and “Me pe se me ho meba keke!” Investigative selections that stand out include “Pilgrimage to the Motherland,” “Deadbeat or Beat Up: My Solutions on Solving the Deadbeat Parent Crisis,” and “On the Cross and Held in Effigy.” As a matter of fact, the latter essay begins: “I believe that learning about Jesus Christ through the Black church renders a person academically inferior and intellectually obtuse in the quest for modern day liberation.”
The theme for volume IV, “Journey...to the Beginning,” features selections where contributors discuss places where they would like to go in the future for their betterment, (Journey,) and initiatives they envision themselves starting for the betterment of themselves and others, (…to the Beginning.)
